Engerth, Wilhelm Freiherr von#

b. Pszczyna, Poland (then Pless), May 26, 1814, d. Leesdorf (municipality of Baden, Lower Austria), Sept. 4, 1884, railroad and mechanical engineer; brother of Eduard von Engerth. 1844 professor at the Joanneum Research Institute in Graz, 1855 central director of the Austro-Hungarian State Railways; 1853 constructed the first mountain locomotive (for the Semmering Railway), promoted the regulation of the Danube around Vienna and 1872 designed the blocking device (floating dam) for the Danube canal in Vienna, was head engineer in the construction of the exhibition halls for the 1873 World Exhibition, Vienna; also advocated digging the tunnel through the Arlberg (mountain in western Austria).
