| Brennelement und radioaktive Brenstoffpelets| This picture is from the Yucca Mountain Project website of the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management . Original caption: These pellets of enriched uranium will be sealed inside metal fuel rods to generate electricity in a nuclear reactor. After three or four years in a reactor, the pellets will become inefficient for producing electricity and the fuel rods will be removed from the reactor. After removal, the fuel rods (now called spent nuclear fuel) will be highly radioactive, requiring safe long-term disposal.| Public domain Public domain false false This image is a work of a United States Department of Energy (or predecessor organization) employee, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. | The first nuclear reactor was erected in 1942 in the West Stands section of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. On December 2, 1942 a group of scientists achieved the first self-sustaining chain reaction and thereby initiated the controlled release of nuclear energy. The reactor consisted of uranium and uranium oxide lumps spaced in a cubic lattice embedded in graphite. In 1943 it was dismantled and reassembled at the Palos Park unit of the Argonne National Laboratory.| http://narademo.umiacs.umd.edu/cgi-bin/isadg/viewobject.pl?object=95120| Melvin A. | Neutron Radiography Reactor, Hot Fuels Examination Facility, Idaho National Laboratory. The Neutron Radiography Reactor is a 250 kW TRIGA reactor. It is equipped with two beam tubes and two separate radiography stations and used for neutron radiography irradiation of small test components. The blue glow is caused by Cherenkov radiation . The light water surrounding the core provides ample radiation protection for observers.| https://inldigitallibrary.inl.gov/sites/sti/sti/Sort_11249.pdf| | [{Image src='https://www.austria-forum.org/cc/images/slim/publicdomain.png' alt='Public domain' align='center' link='https://www.austria-forum.org/cc/public-domain-10.html' target='_blank'}]| Datei:TrigaReactorCore.jpeg
