Buddhist Religious Community in Austria: officially recognised as a religious community in Austria since 1983, several hundred members. The origins of Buddhism in Austria can be traced back to the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. After being banned between 1938 and 1945, smaller groups were re-established after 1945. In 1975, a Buddhist centre was founded in Scheibbs, another followed soon after in Vienna. In 1983, a peace pagoda was inaugurated in Vienna. The Buddhist Religious Community in Austria encompasses 8 Buddhist religious orders.
