Adriatic Sea: Once Austria had established itself on the Adriatic by
acquiring Trieste in 1382, it began to expand its position in Istria
(1466 Rijeka = Fiume, 1719 a free port); Austria received the
Dalmatian coast in the Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797, thus coming
into conflict with Italy over predominance in the Adriatic after 1860.
In the Treaty of London (1915) Italy received broad assurances from
Western powers and as a consequence entered World War I on their side.
However, Italy's desires were only partly fulfilled, and thus rivalry
with Yugoslavia arose during the inter-war period; Yugoslavia received
a considerable part of the formerly Austrian territories on the
Adriatic (with the exception of Trieste) in 1946. Today, most of the
coastal area belongs to Croatia; Slovenia only has the port of Koper.
