!!!Aguntum

Aguntum, important Roman settlement approx. 4 km east of Lienz in 
East Tirol which was raised to the status of an autonomous town 
(Municipium Claudium Aguntum) under the Emperor Claudius (41-54 A.D.). 
Most prosperous time was in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D.; destroyed 
several times in late Roman times. In the 5th century, Aguntum was the 
seat of a bishop ( Lavant). Around 610 the Bavarian Duke 
Garibald II was defeated by the Slavs near Aguntum. Excavations 
have revealed a town wall with a monumental gateway, an atrium house 
built after an Italian model, as well as craftsmen's and business 
quarters of the settlement. Relics of early Christianity include a 
burial chapel and a church with graveyard. Ancient Roman ruins were 
still visible up to the late 16%%sup th/%  century; excavations have 
been going on since the 18th century
