Arbeo#
Arbeo, d. May 4, 783 (784?), priest from the Meran/Merano (South Tyrol) area, from 765 Bishop of Freising (Bavaria), where he is buried. Author of the lives of the Bavarian saints Corbinian and Emmeram. Said to be the first writer of German descent. Ancient historiography credits him with having commissioned the first German book, the "Abrogans", a Latin-Old High German glossary, of which several versions exist. The title of the book corresponds to its first entry "abrogans" (modest).
