Bad Voeslau, Lower Austria, town in the town district of Baden, 
chartered 1954, alt. 276 m, pop. 11,055, area 38.76 km%%sup 2/%, 
spa town on the  Thermenlinie on the southern slopes of the Vienna 
Woods. Training and education centre of the Ministry of Defence for 
medical orderlies in Gainfarn, thermal bath (hot mineral spring with a 
low content of minerals carried in solution, 24° C), therapy 
centre, Assembly Room, spa park, Merkenstein research centre of the 
University of Veterinary Medicine, town museum, School of Forestry, 
School of Viticulture and Pomiculture, Institute of Apiculture 
(Gainfarn Palace); service industries main source of income, employing 
61 % of all gainfully employed persons in 1991 (especially in 
trade, personal, social and public services), large printing house, 
table water bottling by the Heilquellen-Verwertungs-AG, tourism 
(45,849 overnight stays), viticulture (especially red wine, since the 
early 13%%sup th/%  century), bathing activity increased in the second 
half of the 18%%sup th/%  century, officially recognised as a spa in 
1904, called "Bad" (i.e. spa) Voeslau since1928, parish church 
(erected 1860-1868 by F. Sitte); former palace, friezes altered by 
J. F. Hetzendorf v. Hohenberg after the year 1753 (documented in 
the 12%%sup th/%  century, kept in the town hall since 1974), Gainfarn 
palace and parish church (18%%sup th/%  century), Grossau Palace 
(12%%sup th/%  century), fortress of Merkenstein (12%%sup th/%  
century), fell into disuse in 1683.
