!!!Benedek Benedec, Ludwig von

b. Sopron; Hungary (then Oedenburg), July 14, 1804, 
d. Graz (Styria), April 27, 1881, general. Fought in Upper Italy and 
Hungary in 1848/49 distinguished himself in the Battle of  Solferino 
(Commander of the Maria-Theresia-Order); 1860 chief of staff, supreme 
command in Veneto; 1872 master of ordnance; in the  Austro-Prussian 
War commander of the Northern Regiment which was defeated by H. von 
Moltke in the decisive battle at  Koeniggraetz (Battle of Sadowa, July 
3, 1866) leading to his dismissal. Emperor  Franz Josef I chose to 
dispense with a court-martial.
