Vienna, Oct. 8, 1912,electrical fitter, trade unionist and politician of the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPOe). 1934 and 1937 imprisoned for his support of the then illegal Free Trade Unions (Freie Gewerkschaften). 1963-1987 president of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions, 1956-1986 Member of the Nationalrat, 1971-1986 President of the Nationalrat. During Chancellor B. Kreisky's Social Democratic Party administration (1970-1983) one of the most influential politicians; together with the president of the Federal Economic Chamber, R. Sallinger, a pillar of the Austrian Social Partnership.
