Bergl, Johann Baptist Wenzel#
b. Dvur Králove, Czech Republic (then Koeniginhof), Sept. 23, 1718, d. Vienna, Jan. 15, 1789; painter. Studied under P. Troger, close friend of F. A. Maulbertsch. Famous for his original fresco painting of ground-level garden apartments, which created an organic cohesion between garden and room. The depiction of idyllic landscapes featuring exotic plants and romantic elements made his fresco painting a new variation of baroque trompe l'oeil painting. Along with Court commissions such as the B.-room in Schoenbrunn Palace (around 1770) he was also engaged by the Church. His decorative paintings in the former monastery church in Kleinmariazell are considered his main work (1764/1765).
