!!!Berliner Kongress

Berlin, Congress of, assembly of leading statesmen of the great
European powers and Turkey convened by O.v. Bismarck for peace
negotiations on Austria's and England's initiative after the
Russian-Turkish war of 1877/78; the Congress was held from June 13
until July 13, 1878 in Berlin. Austria-Hungary, represented by foreign
minister Count J. Andrássy, was given the authorisation to
occupy and administer the Turkish provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina
and Novi Pazar. This was supposed to counteract Russian predominance
in the Balkans in Austria's favour, but only widened the gap between
the two powers, which eventually led to the Dual Alliance and was one
of the causes of the First World War.
