b. Dresden (Germany), Jan. 13, 1809, 
d. Altenberg Palace (Lower Austria), Oct. 23, 1886, Saxon and Austrian 
statesman. Political opponent of Otto von Bismarck, 1866-1871 Austrian 
Foreign Minister; from 1867 also Prime Minister (from 1868 held the 
title of Imperial Chancellor). 1867 reached a settlement with Hungary 
in the  Compromise, Austro-Hungarian and gave Austria its first 
constitution. After his dismissal in 1871 became ambassador in London 
and 1878-1882 in Paris.
