Political opponent of Otto von Bismarck, 1866-1871 Austrian Foreign Minister; from 1867 also Prime Minister (from 1868 held the title of Imperial Chancellor). 1867 reached a settlement with Hungary in the Compromise, Austro-Hungarian and gave Austria its first constitution.
