!!!Billroth, Theodor

b. Bergen (Ruegen, Germany), April 26, 1829, 
d. Opatija (Croatia), Feb. 6, 1894, important surgeon of the  Vienna 
School of Medicine. From 1867 university professor in Vienna; started 
basic research in the field of visceral surgery, 1874 first complete 
laryngectomy, 1881 first gastric resection. B. introduced mixed 
anaesthesia (ether and chloroform) and the waterproof dressing 
material "B.-Batist". He arranged for the premises of the Society of 
Physicians to be built (1893) and the Rudolfinerhaus hospital, where 
nurses could be trained, and promoted the establishment of a voluntary 
ambulance service in Vienna. Was also a musician and a close friend of 
J.  Brahms.
