Blind, Care of the is part of general welfare and, in Austria, is 
mainly carried out by the provinces, the federal state, pension 
insurance companies etc. This kind of help is based on the Social 
Assistance Acts of the provinces (Sozialhilfegesetze), the Attendance 
Allowance Acts of the provinces and the federal government, the 
Federal Disability Act and the Family Benefit Act.

On a private basis, associations and interest groups work for a higher 
level of integration, rehabilitation and acceptance of visually 
handicapped or blind people in all areas of life. At present, the 
following associations are active in this respect: Verein Blickkontakt 
(interest group for blind, visually impaired and seeing people), 
Self-help group for parents with visually handicapped children in 
Austria, Odilieninstitut Graz association, Association for Early 
Stimulation and Encouragement (Verein fuer Fruehfoerderung), Help 
Association for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (Hilfsgemeinschaft 
der Blinden und Sehschwachen Oesterreichs), Austrian Association of 
the Blind, Oesterreichisches Retinitis-Pigmentosa-Forschungsprojekt 
(Austrian Retinitis-Pigmentosa Research Project), Verein Vision.
