b. Berne (Switzerland), June 13, 1823, 
d. Vienna, Aug. 24, 1914, physicist and entomologist. 1851 introduced 
telegraphy in Switzerland, in 1857 became director of the Austrian 
Telegraph Services and later brought telegraphy to Greece and Turkey. 
His collection of orthopters was one of the most important in the 
world (today in the Vienna Museum of Natural History).
