Buchproduktion#

Book Production: there are around 230 publishing houses in Austria. The list of distributors contains the names of 2,700 publishing firms represented by Austrian book distribution companies; the Austrian Book Trade Directory contains the names of 1,500 book shops.


In 1992 3,810 titles were produced (of which 3,243 were sold by the book trade); 3,628 were books in the strict sense (among them were 285 translations and 358 books published by book clubs). In 1992 Austria exported books, newspapers, journals, music and cartographic products worth ATS 2.03 billion. Export markets are mainly Germany and the rest of the German speaking countries (more than 73 % of total exports); other markets are Poland, Hungary, Italy and the Czech Republic. Austria takes part in international book fairs and exhibitions. Every year the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs awards the State Prize "Die schoensten Buecher Oesterreichs" ("Austria's Finest Books").
