b. Arezzo (Italy), Aug. 5, 1623, d. Florence (Italy), Oct. 14, 1669, Italian composer of operas, director of music to Archduke Ferdinand Karl in Innsbruck where he composed "Orontea" (1656) and "La Dori" (1657) two of the most famous operas of the 17th century; 1666-1669 assistant musical director to Leopold I in Vienna for whose 1st wedding he composed the opera "Il pomo d'oro" ("The Golden Apple"), but which was performed for the first time only one and a half years later. C. had a lasting effect on Austrian baroque opera.
