b. Herford (Germany), Dec. 25, 1769, 
d. Prague (Czech Republic), Aug. 28, 1837, actor, director, author; 
initially member of touring companies, then in Germany and Salzburg; 
from 1818 character actor and comedian at the Vienna Burgtheater, 
later also director. Famous for his role as Shylock in Shakespeare's 
"Merchant of Venice" and as the monk in Lessing's "Nathan the Wise".
