David, Johann Nepomuk#
b. Eferding (Upper Austria), Nov. 30, 1895, d. Stuttgart (Germany), Dec. 22, 1977. Composer; father of Thomas Christian David; from 1920 to 1923 studied in Vienna under J. Marx; 1924-1934 primary school teacher and organist in Wels; (1934) teacher at Leipzig Conservatory, in 1945 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and in Stuttgart (1948-1963). Known as a traditionalist and polyphonist, esp. in sacred music. Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1953 and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1966.
Works#Numerous concertos and symphonies, organ pieces, many sacred vocal pieces (Chorale versions after J. S. Bach), chamber music.
