Interpreter, professional in oral translation, acting as a mediator in communication between people of different languages. Interpreters mainly work for international organisations, sometimes also at court and with public authorities. In Austria their training was institutionalised very early on ( Orientalische Akademie); today interpretation is studied at university ("Dolmetscherausbildung", academic degree "Mag. phil."). However, the profession of interpreter is open to anyone with the appropriate knowledge and skills.
