Art historian, professor and head of department in Vienna from 1909. 
Main representative of the "Vienna School" of art history. D. was a 
leader in his field in taking the greater intellectual/historical 
context of works of art as the basis for his observations; also made 
essential contributions to the organisation of historical monument 
preservation in Austria (Curator General from 1905).
