Eckartsau, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Gaenserndorf, 
alt. 147 m, pop. 1140, area 48.98 km%%sup 2/%, in the 
Marchfeld region, at the northern edge of the Danube wetlands. 
-National park (Danube Wetlands National Park) administration of the 
Oesterreichische Bundesforste AG (Austrian Federal Forests) in E. 
castle. - First documented mention 1160; originally medieval parish 
church (reconstructed in Baroque style in 1703); castle (first 
documented mention 1180) with extensive gardens, 1722-1732 
reconstructed and extended in Baroque style, in 1760 sold to Emperor 
Franz I, 1897/98 partly restored under Archduke Franz Ferdinand 
(hunting trophies), banqueting hall with frescoes by D. Gran (1732), 
Austria´s last emperor Karl lived here from November 1918 to 
March 1919 before going into exile. Chamber music performances.
