!!!Eggenberg, Johann Ulrich Freiherr von, Herzog von Krumau

Eggenberg, Baron Johann Ulrich von, Duke of Krumau, b. probably 
in Graz (Styria), June 1568, d. Ljubljana (Slovakia), 
Oct. 18, 1634. Became a baron in 1598; raised to the position of 
"Reichsfuerst" (Imperial Prince) in 1623; became Duke of 
Ceský Krumlov, Czech Republic (then Krumau) in 1628. Converted 
to Catholicism and became a friend of the young  Ferdinand II, 
later became his adviser and chamberlain. From 1602 governor of 
Carniola, member of the Privy Council for Inner Austria and President 
of the Hofkammer (court treasury); 1615 Lord Steward to 
Ferdinand II, President of the Privy Council and Statthalter 
(territorial governor) of the Inner Austrian provinces. After the 
Battle of the White Mountain he recommended a harsh course of action 
against the Protestants and in 1622 was given Krumau and other estates 
in Bohemia; became Reichsfuerst and one of the wealthiest men of his 
time (estates in Bohemia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, 
Carniola). Because of his association with A.  Wallenstein, he retired 
from the Court after Wallenstein´s murder. He built  Eggenberg 
Palace near Graz.
