b. Vienna, Jan. 18, 1880, 
d. Leyden (Netherlands), Sept. 25, 1933, physicist, professor of 
theoretical physics in Leyden from 1912, belonged to A. Einstein's 
circle of friends. Research on Einstein's theory of gravitation, 
Planck's quantum theory and capillarity theory; E.'s hypothesis on 
"adiabatic invariants" made him a forerunner of atomic physics.
