Exner-Ewarten, Siegmund von#
Exner-Ewarten, Siegmund von, b. Vienna, April 5, 1846, d. Vienna, Feb. 5, 1926, physiologist, son of Franz Serafin Exner, husband of Emilie Exner,father of Alfred von Exner-Ewarten and Felix-Maria von Exner-Ewarten. From 1874 professor of physiology at the University of Vienna. Localized centres of the human brain and played a leading role in reforming university regulations concerning medical studies. In 1904 founded the new Institute of Physiology in Vienna. initiated the establishment of the archives of phonogrammes of the Academy of Sciences and became famous for his animal experiments (e.g. bird flight and gliding). He especially dealt with the physiology of the central and peripheral nervous system and the experimental analysis of psychological reactions. From 1910 president of the medical Association in Vienna.
