b. Budapest (Hungary), June 12, 1937, biologist and ethologist. Pupil of K. Lorenz; from 1973 professor at Goettingen University and head of its Department of Game Biology and Hunting, from 1981 honorary professor at the University of Vienna, 1980 president of the Konrad Lorenz Society for the environment and ethology. Played a major role in the establishment of nature preserves in Austria and Hungary. Awarded the Austrian State Prize for Environmental Protection in 1988.
