b. Paderborn (Germany), April 30, 1826, 
d. Innsbruck (Tirol), July 10, 1902, historian; father of Heinrich von 
 Ficker, Ludwig von  Ficker and Rudolf von  Ficker. 1852-1879 
professor at the University of Innsbruck, later private scholar; 
teacher of several important historians (E.  Ottenthal, E.  
Muehlbacher, O.  Redlich); head of the "Regesta Imperii". Became known 
for his controversy with H. v. Sybel over the imperial policy of the 
Middle Ages. Member of several Academies of Sciences.
