Film Institutions: Films have been stored in the Austrian National 
Library since 1929 and in the film archives for film studies founded 
by J. Gregor in 1931 (part of the Theatre Collection). The School of 
Film-making and Television founded by W. Kolm-Veltee and the 
Department for Film and Television introduced in 1960 by Winge at the 
Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna were consolidated in 1963 into the 
School of Film and Television at the Academy for Music and Performing 
Arts in Vienna (since 1970 has been a department for film and 
television at the University of Music and Performing Arts. From 1934 
to 1938 the Federal Ministry of Education ran the Institute for Film 
Culture.

In 1949 the Department of Theatre Studies at the University of Vienna 
began giving lectures on film studies and film theory (later also the 
Universities of Innsbruck, Salzburg and Klagenfurt). The use of film 
for advertising purposes was taught at the University of World Trade 
in Vienna. The Austrian Society for Film Studies and Communication 
Research co-ordinates all activities concerning film studies. In 1955 
the Austrian Film Archives (Vienna, Laxenburg) was established by L. 
Gesek as a collection of Austrian feature films, documentaries and 
weekly newsreels including all materials dealing with the medium of 
film; in 1964 the Austrian Film Museum was established by P. Kubelka 
and P. Konlechner. It shows primarily retrospectives of international 
film classics and  Avant-garde Films. The "Media Service of the 
Federal Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs" (formerly 
"Bundesstaatliche Hauptstelle fuer Lichtbild und Bildungsfilm", 
S.H.B.-Film, founded in 1945) provides audiovisual media for 
educational purposes. The military counterpart is the 
"Heeresbildstelle". From 1956 the "Film Oesterreich" campaign 
(formerly called "Der gute Film" - "The Good Film") consistently 
sought to show international top-quality films on a regular basis and 
to raise the quality of domestic film production. Austrian cinema and 
TV film production was supported by the Oesterreichischer 
Filmfoerderungsfond from 1981 to 1993, when it was renamed 
Oesterreichisches Filminstitut ( Film Promotion).

Austrian Film Commission; umbrella organisation of Austria filmmakers; 
Oesterreichisches Bundesinstitut fuer den wissenschaftlichen Film 
(Austrian Federal Institute for Educational Films) (OeWF); Verband der 
oesterreichischen Filmjournalisten (Association of Austrian Film 
Journalists); various distribution corporations.
