Foundlings, abandoned children, mainly infants whose parents cannot be traced. Due to the large number of foundlings, special foundling homes were established by hospitals from the 16th century and by cities from the 18th century onwards. Under Emperor Joseph II foster mothers were entrusted with the care of foundlings and were paid by the state.
