b. Bebele (Germany), Nov. 2, 1740, 
d. Vienna, April 27, 1820, sculptor and anatomist; lived in Vienna 
from 1760; 1806 professor of sculpture at the Academy; 1815 director 
of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts; important representative of 
classicist sculpture in Austria. During his lifetime he was famous for 
his anatomical dummy ("Anatomie-Figur"), which was based on his 
anatomical studies.

figures in parks (Neuwaldegg, Schoenbrunn, Eisgrub); portrait 
busts; tombstones (Prague, St. Poelten, Graz); fountain (Vienna). - 
Writings: Erklaerung der anatom. Statue fuer Kuenstler, 1785; 
Darstellung des Knochenbaues von dem menschl. Koerper mit Angabe der 
Verhaeltnisse desselben, 1806.
