Fitness Movement: The fitness movement developed in the USA in the early 1950s in an attempt to counteract the effects of lack of physical exercise combined with overeating and an excessively rich diet. In Austria the movement was initiated in 1970 by the establishment of the Fitness Committee of the Oesterreichische Bundes-Sportorganisation; since then, annual sports events have been organised: a "fitness run" and "fitness hike" on the occasion of the Austrian National Holiday (October 26), a "national cross-country skiing event" (since 1973) national day of cycling tours (since 1977). Additional events are organised by private and public institutions.
