b. Brno, Czech Republic (then Bruenn), Feb. 5, 1895, d. Bad Ischl (Upper Austria), Aug. 1, 1981, writer, translator; 1933 emigrated to London via the Netherlands; 1940-1958 radio announcer of the Austrian department of the BBC; 1953-1958 president of the P. E. N-centre for German writers living abroad; 1963 returned to Vienna, 1972 married Hilde Spiel. F.-B. became famous for his expressionist stories and later wrote mainly historical novels.
