d. Bad Ischl (Upper Austria), Aug. 1, 1981, writer, translator; 1933 
emigrated to London via the Netherlands; 1940-1958 radio announcer of 
the Austrian department of the BBC; 1953-1958 president of the P. E. 
N-centre for German writers living abroad; 1963 returned to Vienna, 
1972 married Hilde  Spiel. F.-B. became famous for his expressionist 
stories and later wrote mainly historical novels.

Das zerstoerte Idyll, 1917 (novellas). Novels: Die Amazone, 
1930; Alkibiades, 1935; Perlen und schwarze Traenen, 1948; Die Teile 
und das Ganze, 1969. - Die verfuehrte Zeit, 1988 (autobiographical).
