Winged Dinosaur, Archeological Findings of: Since the beginning of the 19th century bituminous coal from the Cretaceous period has been mined in Lower Austria near Gruenbach which had formed in a river delta some 75-80 million years ago. The deposits belonged to the Gosau formation. In addition to fossils of other dinosaurs, crocodiles, aquatic turtles and lizards, fossilised remains of the winged reptile, Ornithocheirus bunzeli (lower jaw joint, humerus fragment and pieces of finger-like bones) were found in a mine drift close to Muthmannsdorf (Lower Austria). Its wing span is estimated to have been 1.5-1.75 m. It was a medium-sized short-tailed pterosaur with a long thin jaw and strong teeth.
