Women's Day, International (March 8), day of protest against 
discrimination, sexism and racism; focuses on women's right to equal 
treatment and self-determination. Women's Day, which traces its 
origins back to commemorative meetings on the occasion of the violent 
death of striking textile workers in New York (1857) is celebrated in 
the form of meetings, manifestations, processions and the like. 
Commemoration at the international level was initiated in 1910 by C. 
Zetkin at the 2%%sup nd/%  International Socialist Women's Conference 
at Copenhagen. The idea was adopted in 1911-1913 by women in Germany, 
Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, USA, France, the Netherlands, Sweden 
and Russia.
