Freistadt, Selbstverwaltung#
Freistadt (Royal Free City): in Hungary, term for cities granted the right to autonomous administration and, after 1405, participation in the Reichsrat (Imperial Diet); developed in the 13th century from settlements granted German town charters. Eisenstadt (city charter on October 26, 1648 by Emperor Ferdinand III) and Rust (city charter in 1681 granted by the Reichsrat (Imperial Diet) of Oedenburg/Sopron) were royal free cities. In 1926 the two cities were recognised as cities with their own statutes.
