Foreign Words (Fremdwoerter), words which are taken over into German from a foreign language. Many loan words are not immediately recognisable as foreign words, with others it is obvious from which language they come. Foreign words have been taken over due to educational processes (Latin), close proximity of neighbouring countries and immigration (Czech, Hungarian) or for cultural and economic reasons. In the 17th century many words came into colloquial Austrian usage from Italian, in the 18th /19th centuries from French, since 1945 primarily from English.
