d. Passau (Germany), after 1545, painter and exponent of the Danube
School (Donauschule); son and pupil of R. Frueauf the elder, from
1497 citizen of Passau. It is believed that he lived in Austria for a
fairly long period around 1500, when he created his principal works
for the Monastery of Klosterneuburg (Johannes altar, 1498/99; Leopold
altar, 1505). F. is known as one of the pioneers of the Danube School
movement in Austria. He often combined sacred scenes and profane

as a background in his paintings.
