!!!Gardebataillon, Wiener

Gardebataillon, Wiener (Vienna Guards Battalion): In the course of the
establishment of the Austrian Federal Army, the Provisional Border
Guard Division I was transformed into the "Heereswachbataillon" on May
1, 1956, and on May 15, 1957, reorganised to form the Gardebataillon,
which continued the tradition of the Federal army of the First
Republic and the Imperial Guards. The G. also took over the flag of
the former Imperial Body-Guard from the Museum of Military History and
bears it in ceremonies and parades. The soldiers of the G. have
several representational duties (as guard of honour at state
receptions, presentation of credentials of ambassadors to the Federal
President, laying of wreaths at the Vienna Heldendenkmal memorial on
All Souls´ Day); also trained for fighting (infantry battalion).
