!!!Gauermann, Friedrich

b. Miesenbach (Lower Austria), Sept. 20, 1807, 
d. Vienna, July 7, 1862, painter of landscapes, animals, portraits and 
genre pictures; son of Jakob  Gauermann, brother of Carl  Gauermann. 
For a short time at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, trained himself 
further by studying 17th century Dutch paintings of landscapes and 
animals, went on walking tours to study the landscape in the Austrian 
Alps, made trips to Munich, Dresden and Venice. Tried to express his 
personal impressions of nature in powerful paintings. Especially 
renowned for the interesting use of colour in his oil sketches, 
considered the leading representative of the Viennese school of 
painting. Famous for his landscapes with genre scenes of peasant life, 
his animal paintings and hunting scenes, during his lifetime commonly 
seen in lithograph form.
