!!!Georgenberger Handfeste

Georgenberger Handfeste, historical document of the treaty of
inheritance between Duke Otakar IV of Styria and Duke
Leopold V of Austria, dated August 17, 1186, concluded on
Georgenberg Hill near Enns. Incurably ill, the Styrian duke confirmed
that, in case he died without offspring, he would pass all sovereign
rights to Leopold (and his son, Friedrich). Additionally, the rights
of the Styrian Estate officials, peasants and monasteries were laid
down. This treaty made the Babenbergs the future princes of Styria
with the Emperor´s tacit consent. Otakar died in 1192 and Styria
and the Upper Austrian Traungau region were ceded to the Austrian
dukes.
