Weightlifting established itself as a modern competitive sport in the late 1870s; currently it comprises the disciplines snatch, jerk and total Contestants are divided into body-weight categories. Since 1987/88 women have also participated in weightlifting in Austria. Austrian weightlifters have been highly successful, particularly before World War I (4 Olympic champions, 32 world champions, 27 European champions).The Austrian Weightlifting Association (OeGV), which was founded in 1890, comprises 65 clubs with 5,128 members.
