Viertel, F. Kortner, J. Gielen and O. F. Schuh; worked as a director at many theatres including the Vienna Burgtheater, the Zurich Schauspielhaus and in Frankfurt am Main. First film in 1957, in 1981 breakthrough with the film version of Torberg's "Der Schueler Gerber"; his film "38 - Heim ins Reich" (1985) was nominated for an Oscar.
