Green Alder (Alnus viridis), European shrub of 3-6 m height, present in the Alps and the Carpathians between 1,500 m and 2,800 m above sea level; the only deciduous tree to grow at such altitudes; forms thickets and has replaced the dwarf pine as a typical plant on the tree line in the Central Alps. Important pioneer tree species for landslide prevention and stabilising slopes in danger of erosion, which acts as nurse tree for sycamore, beech and spruce.
