Gussenbauer, Carl, b. Obervellach (Carinthia), Oct. 30, 1842, 
d. Vienna, June 19, 1903, surgeon. University professor in 
Liège, Prague and Vienna, succeeded T. Billroth as head of the 
2nd Surgical University Clinic in 1894, developed new surgical methods 
(large intestine) and instruments; the first effective artificial 
larynx. As a mountaineer G. was one of the first to explore many areas 
in the Hohe Tauern mountains, the Schober and the Reichenspitz 
mountain groups.
