b. Altlengbach (Lower Austria), Sept. 14, 1949, biologist and
politician (Austrian Social Democratic Party, SPOe), mayor of Vienna
(since Nov. 7, 1994). Studied biology and zoology in Vienna and worked
at the Museum of Natural History. 1975-1977 federal chairman of the
Austrian Association of Socialist Students, 1978-1984 official of the
Young Generation of the SPOe. 1983-1988 member of the Landtag of
Vienna and of the local council, 1988-1994 city councillor for
environment and sport. Since 1993 head of SPOe Vienna.
