!!!Höger, Joseph

b. Vienna, Nov. 3, 1801, 
d. Vienna, May 13, 1877, landscape painter, water-colourist, etcher 
and lithographer. Brother-in-law of F.  Gauermann, with whom he 
undertook several walking-tours to study art (incl. Northern Italy and 
Venice 1838). Studied at the Vienna Academy, 1849-1851 professor at 
this institution. Well-known for his atmospheric and dramatic forest 
and mountain landscapes and for his detailed and accurate colours, 
which led his friends to nickname him "Baeume-Raffael" 
(Trees-Raffael). Many of his works served as models for lithographs.
