!!!Hochstetter, Ferdinand von

b. Esslingen (Germany), April 30, 1829, 
d. Vienna, July 18, 1884, geologist and prehistorian. 1857-1859 took 
part in the  Novara Expedition, during which he explored New Zealand. 
Professor at the Polytechnical Institute in Vienna, 1876 director of 
the Museum of Natural History, established the anthropological 
ethnographic department there. President of the Geology Society, 
proposed the founding of a Prehistoric Commission at the Academy of 
Sciences (1878). "H.-Dom" (a mountain in New Zealand) and the 
"H.-Fiord" in Greenland are named after him.
