Kanaltal#
Val Canale (Kanaltal), in South Tyrol, most important traffic link between Carinthia and Italy. The Southern railway (Suedbahn) leaves the Gail valley to the north of Arnoldstein, reaches Val Canale at Tarvisio and goes on through the Tagliamento valley to Venice and Trieste. The motorway takes the same route. The Val Canale, which is drained by the Fella River, separates the Carnic Alps in the north from the Julian Alps. It belonged to Austria until the end of World War I.
