Kepler, Johannes, b. Weil der Stadt (Germany), Dec. 27, 1571, 
d. Regensburg (Germany), Nov. 15, 1630, German astronomer and 
mathematician. Came to Graz in 1594, went to Prague in 1600 and became 
court astronomer of Emperor  Rudolf II, in 1612 moved to Linz, 
where he worked as a teacher for 14 years; from 1628 in the service of 
A. von  Wallenstein. Outstanding achievements in the field of 
astronomy and optics including the three laws of planetary motion 
named after him (which he deduced from the records of T. de Brahe), 
the theory of lenses and the telescope with 2 convex lenses. The 
University of Linz has been named after K.
